The Toda are an extraordinary tribe of only a thousand people who live in the Nilgiri hills. They know no war. They do not work, they follow neither agriculture, trade or manufacture.

They live from what they find in the jungle and from the milk of the wild buffalo whom they honour as their equals – they do not hunt or kill them.

Their language is unique and has no script. They do not believe in gods. Instead they live in an intensive spiritual relationship with their ancestors and nature, with special stones, trees, hills and lakes with which they communicate.

The beautiful women live partly in polyandry. Their children often have different fathers. Their family is the clan, which the men want to dominate but in which the women prove themselves stronger. A hierarchy with leadership is unknown to them.

At the moment this happy world still exists. But civilisation threatens their paradise – from within and without.
